The pre-jury has now selected the 10 string quartets and 10 wind quintets who will be given the opportunity to compete on the three great venues of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, Royal Danish Library and the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen this October. The number of applicants has doubled for this year’s competition and talented ensembles from all over the world have applied to the preliminary round.
3 major cultural institutions
The competition takes place from 15 – 19 October 2019 and is a collaboration between three major Danish cultural institutions: Danish Broadcasting Corporation, Royal Danish Library and the Royal Danish Academy of Music. The Carl Nielsen International Chamber Music Competition is exclusively for string quartet and wind quintet and was established in 2015 to create more focus on the brilliant chamber music works of the Danish composer Carl Nielsen by letting it be interpreted by the best young musicians from all over the world. The fantastic, French Quatuor Arod won the quartet category and the sparkling, Danish Carl Nielsen – Kvintetten won the quintet category in 2015. It is now held for the 2nd time and all rounds will be live-streamed and broadcast on DR P2.
Prizes and jury
The competition has two different categories and therefore also two juries. They consist of 5 prominent international instrumentalists with great string quartet and wind quintet experience. The Chairmen of the juries are Prof. Günter Pichler (string quartet) and Bjørn Carl Nielsen (wind quintet).
First Prize is 15.000 € in each category.
